XFL Power Rankings Week 3: A New Number One and the Vipers are NOT the Worst Team in the League

XFL Power Rankings Week 3 Edition: A New Number One and the Vipers aren’t the Worst Team in the League

by Logan Borkey

1. Houston Roughnecks (3-0) | Next Week: @ Dallas

P.J. Walker is a stud and the XFL needs to do whatever they can to keep him in
their league. Walker continues to have excellent chemistry with wideout Cam
Phillips who added 3 touchdowns to his league-leading 7. James Butler quietly
emerged as a quality playmaker to complement Houston’s aerial attack running
for 72 yards last Saturday. Allowing the Vipers to score 27 points raises questions
about the defense but P.J. Walker and this offense can outscore pretty much every
team.

2. St. Louis Battlehawks (2-1) | Next Week: vs Seattle

Great win for the Battlehawks who easily beat the New York Guardians last
weekend. Jordan Ta’amu is continuing to look like a capable starting quarterback.
The running back duo of Cristins Michael and Matt Jones rushed for a combined
139 yards and 2 touchdowns and helped take the pressure off Ta’amu. The
Battlehawks also have an excellent defense that has allowed the second-fewest
rushing and passing yards per game as well as allowing the least amount of
touchdowns through three weeks.

Last Week: 3

3. DC Defenders (2-1) | Next Week: @ Tampa Bay

Through the first two weeks of the season, the Defenders were praised as the
best team in the XFL; then they went to LA and got their doors blown off by the
Wildcats. DC’s defensive performances were a big factor in their previous two
wins and removed the pressure on Cardale Jones. However, on Saturday, DC’s
defense looked lost all day forcing Jones to step on. Cardale struggled all game,
forcing too many throws and throwing four picks. This roster is too good and
Pep Hamilton is too good of a coach for the Defenders to completely fall apart.
DC will look to get back on their feet next week when they play the Vipers.

4. Dallas Renegades (2-1) | Next Week: vs Houston

The Renegades offense has been firing on all cylinders since Landry Jones has
been back in the lineup. Cameron Artis-Payne continues to have a great season.
Tight end Donald Parham, who had 101 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns against
the Dragons, had a standout performance and gives Jones a great weapon to
utilize throughout the rest of the season. Dallas also has a solid defense that allows
the fewest points per game. Landry Jones improved from last week but needs to
cut down on his turnovers. The Renegades might not have the offensive firepower
to keep up with the top tier teams but after Week 3, Dallas is looking closer to the
preseason favorites they were picked as early on.

Last Week: 4

5. Los Angeles Wildcats (1-2) | Next Week: @ New York

Great win for the Wildcats. After a tough loss last weekend to Dallas, LA came out
and completely dominated one of the league's best teams in DC. Josh Johnson had
a great day with 278 yards and 3 touchdowns. After his two fumbles against Dallas,
running back Elijah Hood was benched in favor of Martez Carter who responded
with 3 total touchdowns. LA could also have the best receiver duo in the league
with Nelson Spruce (75 yards) and Tre McBride (109 yards, 2 touchdowns). Los
Angeles is a completely different team from Week 1 since Josh Johnson came back
and should continue to improve throughout the season.

Last Week: 7

6. Seattle Dragons (1-2) | Next Week: @ St. Louis

As much as I’m rooting for him I don’t think Brandon Silvers is cutting it for the
Dragons anymore. He struggles with accuracy and is very unpredictable. He should
start against the Battlehawks but if no improvement is seen Seattle should see what
they have with backup BJ Daniels.

Last Week: 5

7. Tampa Bay Vipers (0-3) | Next Week: vs DC

Yes, the winless Vipers are above a team that beat them in the first week of the
season. However, the Vipers impressed me way more than the Guardians last
weekend. Tampa Bay hung with the league's best team all game and finally scored
that elusive offensive touchdown (they had three). Even with their increase in
offensive production, the Vipers still haven’t nailed down their quarterback situation.
After the first two drives, Taylor Cornelius was benched for Quinton Flowers. Flowers
was looking good until he was taken out of the game for Cornelius. The constant
switching of quarterback prevents one from getting into a rhythm. Marc Trestman
needs to figure out his plan with the quarterback position or he could be on his way
out the door. To make matters worse Flowers announced he was taking a leave of
absence. Tampa Bay needs to figure this out.

Last Week: 8

8. New York Guardians (1-2) | Next Week: vs Los Angeles

The Guardians looked dreadful again. New York has been outscored 56-9 in the
past two weeks. A change needs to be made and it starts at quarterback. Matt
McGloin has proven he cannot be a starting quarterback anymore. New York should
give Luis Perez the start this week who has a solid season with the AAF.
